Offsetting Penalties

Offsetting Penalties happen when each team gets called for certain penalties which nullify, or offset, one another. Keep in mind that not all penalties are created equal (worth the same amount of yardage), and therefore not all penalties will offset one another.

Example: If the offense gets called for Unnecessary Roughness (a 15 yard penalty) and the defense gets called for Unsportsmanlike Conduct (a 15 yard penalty) on the same play, those penalties will offset each other.

(Note: In Week 1 of the 2013 Season, we learned that offsetting penalties on a dead ball foul result in a loss of a down, not replaying the down, as would be the case in a live ball foul.)
