Illegal Contact

Illegal Contact is a penalty called when a defensive player (usually a cornerback or safety) messes with an offensive player (usually a wide receiverafter the receiver is 5-yards away from the line of scrimmage and before the ball is in the air. It’s different than pass interference, which can be called on offense or defense and occurs after the ball is already in the air.
